WHEN PARKER “ALMOST LOST HIS EYE” in Drake vs. Chris Brown brawl

Tony Parker was at Manhattan nightclub W.i.P. when bottles started flying all over the place. The season had ended, and Parker was having a short break before joining the French national team to prepare for the 2012 Olympics. Like many other patrons of the nightclub, Parker got caught in the crossfire. A shard of glass scratched his eye in a fight over – Rihanna.

As it turned out, Drake and Chris Brown were both in the club, and given their history with Rihanna (mainly Brown’s), the night ended with an all-out brawl. At first, Parker said his Olympics appearance was not in doubt.

“I was there with a bunch of friends when a fight broke out. They started to throw bottles about. The cornea has been touched. I can’t do anything for seven days. But I was lucky. The injury won’t prevent me from completing the Olympics in any way.”

When Parker sued the nightclub for 20 million, people started wondering about the seriousness of his injury. For that kind of money, you’d need to prove a lot of damages. Then the San Antonio Spurs said they were “very worried” about his future given the fact the injury seemed a lot more serious. When the Spurs comment publicly on a player’s injury like that, that means something is up. Parker then posted on his website that a piece of glass “had penetrated 99 percent of [his] left eye,” and that doctors told him he “almost lost his eye.”

“When I gave my press conference last Friday after passing through the emergency department after getting off the plane, I did not think it would be so serious. I had additional tests on Friday afternoon, and [they] found a piece of glass that had penetrated 99 percent of my left eye. I can say today; I almost lost my eye. So I had surgery on Sunday morning under general anesthesia.”

Luckily, his eye recovered in time for the Olympics, and Parker’s career and life were not permanently affected by this bizarre chain of events.
