Charles Barkley is known for his brutal honesty, golf swing, guarantees, and most of all love of food. When your nickname is The Round Mound of Rebound, it’s not hard to deduce what was the biggest struggle in Barkley’s career was. It’s not an exaggeration when Barkley says he had the career he had because of Moses Malone.

Barkley’s ability to eat is legendary. To try and prevent the 76ers from drafting him, he gained 20 pounds in one day. Here’s how Sir Charles did that – two Grand Slam breakfasts, two big barbecue sandwiches for lunch, and a huge steakhouse dinner; all supported with a lot of soda and milkshake. We know his plan didn’t work as the Sixers still drafted him. It turned out to be the best thing that could happen to Barkley. In college, he played around 300 lbs. (Probably has something to do with the fact he ordered pizza 100 times in his first 200 days of college.) The 76ers wanted him around 285 lbs – Moses got him to 250 lbs.
“This guy was the best ever. He took me under his wing and made me lose 50 pounds and made me a great player. We lived in the same building, and he told the security people anytime I order pizza that they call him. On two, three different occasions, I ordered pizza, and the next thing I know, I’m getting there, and there is this big 6’10” guy knocking on the door with the pizza in his hand. Still, Barkley’s reputation followed him, and it wasn’t just basketball players and fans who knew about Barkley’s passion for food. One way to sneak a cheat meal in was to get invited to dinner. On one occasion his teammate Tim McCormick invited Charles over for dinner. His mom’s reaction was priceless.
We’re not sure what was on the menu at the McCormick’s, but with two weeks head start, there was (probably) enough food.
