Based on the poor start to their season it seems the magic is lost with the Washington Wizards. They are currently 5-11 and the red alarm by the management is definitely turned on. There were a lot of expectations from the Wizards before the start of this season especially after their appearance in the playoffs last season. Naturally, there was a sense of urgency something more concrete needed to be done because John Wall and Bradley Beal won’t get any younger.
Nowadays, there are even some reports from Adrian Wojnarowski that the Wizards management is looking at the option of possibly trading away their biggest assets.
According to Wojnarowski:
“As the Washington Wizards’ season spirals, the franchise has started to deliver teams an impression that every player on their roster — including All-Star guards John Wall and Bradley Beal — is available to discuss in trade scenarios, league sources told ESPN.
Washington’s preference remains to reshape the team around Wall and Beal, but poor play among key teammates is limiting their trade value and paralyzing the Wizards’ efforts to make meaningful changes to a roster that no longer appears functional together, league sources said.
The Wizards have resisted including Wall or Beal into previous trade talks, including discussions that they held for the league’s past two available stars, Kawhi Leonard and Jimmy Butler, league sources said. While Washington hasn’t shopped its All-Star backcourt, it is rapidly becoming apparent to the organization that it needs to start considering overtures for them.
Beal and Wall are their biggest stars and have the most worth on the market, however, they’ve been pretty solid throughout this season. It seems Otto Porter and Kelly Oubre are the player’s Wizards are trying to turn into a possible third option that could help Beal and Wall. The problem that lies there is that Oubre and Porter are not worth much to other teams in a trade package.
As I already said, at the beginning of the season Wizards were even recognized as one of the teams that could possibly aim for the eastern conference finals but at this point that doesn’t seem realistic.
Wizards will have to make something happen that would shift the team in a positive direction if they want to make an impact this season. Either through a trade or with some changes in the team strategy but it looks their team will look different in the upcoming weeks since they are seriously considering a trade that would strengthen their positions to contend for a championship.
