Tyler Hansbrough recalls getting hit by Gerald Henderson: ‘I still want to get him back one day.’

The rivalry between UNC and Duke gave us numerous great games throughout the years. If you are a big fan of college basketball and especially North Carolina Tar Heels, you probably remember Tyler Hansbrough and his impact on the squad while playing. He had numerous memorable moments in a Tar Heels jersey, but one that maybe stood out was the infamous incident in a game against Duke. After grabbing a rebound, Hansbrough got hit in the nose by Gerald Henderson, which caused Hansbrough to be fully covered in blood. Over 14 years have passed since that moment, and Hansbrough still wants his revenge because of that broken nose.

In an interview for ACC Network, Hansbrough talked about that game and said that he always wanted to get back at Henderson but never did not, even when they were both in the NBA later on in their careers.

“Gerald admitted that, you know, emotions got the best of him. And we’ve all been there,” Hansbrough said on the show. “But for years, throughout the NBA, every time we played against each other, I said I was gonna get him back. I never got him back and I do regret that. But I know Gerald, Gerald’s — I mean, we’re over it. We’re both highly competitive, but I still want to get him back one day.”

Hansbrough recalls the moment he got hit in the face and realized his face was full of blood. He immediately wanted to retaliate, but he wasn’t sure which players was the one that hit him. Years after the incident, Hansbrough is happy he never started a fight because that would cause more problems for him. However, he still hopes he will get Henderson back in some way.

“When I got my rebound off my own free throw, I’m not sure if I did a pump fake or what, but I remember going up and then just getting drilled. And I didn’t see the defender or who it was, so when I went down — the hit initially didn’t hurt as bad as it looked. But when I was on the ground, I checked my nose and I could tell I was bleeding real bad. So yeah, I was pretty upset. So I got up, and I think I was gonna go after the wrong player. I’m not sure if the DeMarcus Nelson was in there yet. So, I thought he did it for some reason. And so, I was ready to go after him. But looking back, I’m glad I didn’t do that, for multiple reasons.”
