Even when you think they are done and are ready to start the process of rebuilding the roster, the San Antonio Spurs always find a way to stay competitive in the NBA. Even though they had a slow start to the season, and based on their first 20 games it looked like they might miss the playoffs, they completely changed that perspective and have been the best team in the NBA for the past month.
Gregg Popovich’s team changed significantly in the offseason, so it obviously took more time for them to figure out the chemistry and the system that works for best for them. It’s also a well-known fact Popovich sacrifices the regular season for the sake of playoffs and keeping his team in shape for the crunch time.
In the past 15 games, San Antonio Spurs have been playing the type of basketball we are used to seeing from them for the past 20 years and are the most dominant team in the NBA during that time period.
They have been playing tremendous offense and they are currently ranked 1st in the offensive rating. At the same time, they have raised up their defense and are currently 3rd in defensive rating while trailing the 2nd place Oklahoma City Thunder by only 0.2 points.
Their net rating is the best in the league at +15.5 which is by far the best one in the league at this moment. The Indiana Pacers are currently second in that margin at +10.7.
They rank 1st in Offensive Rating, 3rd in Defensive Rating (only 0.2 back of 2nd place Oklahoma City), and 1st in Net Rating by a large margin. Their Net rating is +15.5, and the 2nd place Pacers are at +10.7.
During their last 15 games, they’ve had a 12-3 score and beating some of the best teams in the league like the Nuggets, Celtics, Sixers, and Raptors. They’ve also beat some teams that are also fighting for the playoffs like the Clippers (twice), Jazz and the Lakers.
The San Antonio Spurs also had some troubles with injuries, but now that most of the players are more or less available to play, you could easily see the difference in their approach.
LaMarcus Aldridge and DeMar DeRozan have been the best players on the Spurs and the whole team is starting to gel really well. They are currently on the 6th spot in the western conference but only 1 win away from the 4th spot.
It will be interesting to see how will they fare in the next couple of months, but if you know anything about the Spurs and the culture they’ve implemented during the rain of Gregg Popovich, you can definitely count that they will do their best to get into the playoffs.
The Spurs have been playing great basketball for the past month, and we can only expect them to get better, especially after the All-Star game. This is the receipt for success that is proven to work for the Spurs, and no team is safe when playing a team that is motivated, well structured and on a winning streak.
The only thing we can say at this point is Go Spurs Go!
