The NBA is introducing new rule changes that will punish players who are jumping into a defender to draw a foul

The NBA is making another change to the rules, which will ultimately affect the players on offense which wasn’t the case in recent years. The league has implemented several rule changes in recent years that benefited players on offense greatly, but now things are changing, so some of the things players did on offense will no longer be tolerated.

Players nowadays initiate contact and draw fouls a lot more than before, which becomes a festival of free throws that is essentially hurting the game, and that caused a lot of frustration from the fans. Therefore, the league introduced new rule changes that will start next season to improve the quality of basketball that is played.

According to Shams Charania, the NBA will legislate the game differently next season and punish foul-hunting players that draw unnecessary contact.

The following rule changes will be implemented:

  • When a shooter launches or leans into a defender at an abnormal angle
  • When a shooter kicks his leg (up or to the side) at an abnormal angle.
  • When an offensive player abruptly veers off his path (sideways or backward) into a defender.

That is actually a great move by the NBA because we’ve seen too often players initiating contact for no real reason other than drawing a foul from the opposing player. Obviously, that has always been a part of the game, but we’ve seen how players exploit that too often, and the refs are in a challenging position to call those fouls the majority of the time. This way, players on offense will have to find another way to draw fouls, hopefully improving the game’s quality. It will be interesting to see how players will adapt to these rule changes. Still, it’s an excellent start to balance out the game and potentially make things easier for the defenders, who nowadays have to be very careful if they don’t want to pick up fouls early on in the game because of unnecessary contact.
