THE MESSAGE BEHIND Dennis Rodman’s “Trilogy III” haircut from 1991

During his time with the Detroit Pistons, Dennis Rodman wasn’t so exposed in the media, and his demeanor wasn’t the one he later became famous for; however, that is when it started. Right before Rodman became famous for his unusual hairstyles that ranged from all sorts of colors imaginable, his first foray into creative hair design involved trimming custom messages into the back of his head during his stint with the Detroit Pistons.

The Pistons were a powerhouse in the late ’80s and early 90’s winning two consecutive NBA championships and aiming to become the first team since the Boston Celtics to complete a three-peat. That inspired Rodman to trim the back of his head with a custom message, ‘The Trilogy III’.

Rodman did this at the early start of the playoffs when him and the the Pistons were focused on getting back to the NBA finals. They had their eyes on the prize, but it was none other than Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls that swept them in the ECF and officially ended their reign in the NBA.

The Pistons were not the same team coming into the 1990/91 season, battling injuries and inconsistency. They finished with just 50 wins, which was their lowest winning record since the 1986/87 season. Coming into the playoffs, nobody believed they could pull out another win in the NBA finals, except themselves and especially Rodman, who at that time established himself as one of the best defenders and rebounders in the league.
