The history of the Chris Paul – Rajon Rondo beef

The infamous brawl between Chris Paul and Rajon Rondo when they were still members of the Rockets and the Lakers caused a lot of talk in the NBA world, as the two started trading blows. Even though Harden and Ingram started the fight, Paul and Rondo turned out to be the lead protagonists reminding us all they really don’t like each other and will take every chance to clash. But what is the reason for that? The start of their beef goes all the way back to 2008.

Back then, Rajon Rondo was a raw but talented up-and-coming point guard in the NBA, establishing himself as an instrumental part of the “Big 3” Boston Celtics winning the championship. He proved to be a perfect fit for KG, Pierce, and Allen in only his second season. At the same time, Chris Paul played at an MVP level with the New Orleans Hornets and was considered amongst the best point guards in the game.

So as the 2008 Bejing Olympics were around the corner, both of these players wanted to represent Team USA badly and bring back gold after the 2004 debacle. Paul edged out Rondo for a roster spot and was a part of the “Redeem Team,” while Rondo, who thought he proved his worth in the Finals that year, oozing with confidence, was forced to stay home. Safe to say, he didn’t take it lightly.

Tempers would already flare in 2009, as the two got into it after a regular-season game between the Celtics and the Hornets. Paul was greeting Pierce after the game, when Rondo came up to him and started talking, saying: “I’ve got a ring and you’re never gonna win one.” Paul didn’t appreciate Rondo’s comments, and the two had to be separated. After the game, Rondo requested the media never to ask him about Paul ever again.

So when the two got into it again in 2018, it wasn’t that surprising. Rondo has been known for his antics and short temper, often provoking his opponents, but Paul is more known as a calm family man. Their rivalry is so known in the NBA world that even fans got into the mix, with this guy giving us this hilarious video of “mistaking” Rajon Rondo for Chris Paul.
