On this date in 2004, one of the craziest duels took place in a game between Houston Rockets and Dallas Mavericks. The guys who took over the show that night were none other than prime Dirk Nowitzki and Tracy McGrady.
McGrady became a Houston Rocket that summer, and the team was aiming for a championship after drafting Yao Ming the year before. On the other hand, Dallas has been in playoff contention for a couple of seasons, so this duel was a possible preview of what might happen if these two teams meet in the playoffs.
That was the 18th game in the season for both teams, and it did not have much relevance since it was a regular-season game in December. Dallas started the season with an 11-6 score, while the Rockets had a slower start to the season with a 6-11 score.
That night Dirk and McGrady went back and forth against each other all night long, giving the fans their money worth. This game had a game 7 feel to it, and the scoring by the two superstars was superb. Dirk finished with a game-high 53 points and pulled down 16 rebounds. T-mac was also superb that night and was doing pretty much everything on the floor. He ended the game with 48 points, 9 rebounds, and 9 assists.
They were both shooting exceptionally well that night at around 50 percent from the field, which resulted in a combined score of 101 points by the two stars. What is interesting is that for Dallas, the rest of the team scored only 60 points while for the Rockets, the rest of the team scored 58 points. Dallas would eventually win the game with a score of 113-106.
