Warriors signed D’Angelo Russell this summer, which came as a bit of a surprise to many, however after Durant left and Thompson got injured, they realized they will need someone who can help on offense. Russell is known as a capable scorer which he proved last season with the Brooklyn Nets averaging 21 points per game.
There is a hard challenge in front of Steve Kerr and the rest of the Warriors coaching staff to figure out what kind of system the team will be running next season. Kerr who was interviewed during the Team USA practice said he is excited to coach Russell and believes his talents will come in hand, especially after the team lost two great scorers in Durant and Thomspon.
“I’m excited to coach him. He is a great offensive talent and I think he is going to fit right in with our group. We’re going to need him desperately especially without Klay we need D’Angelos scoring. It’s up to us as a staff to figure out how to best use him and shape the team, shape the offense and figure it out.”
It will be extremely difficult for Warriors to compensate for the departure of Durant, and it will definitely help to have Klay Thompson back, however, there are many question marks if he will ever come back the same. In regards to Russell, he is without a doubt a great scorer capable of dropping 20 points on a nightly basis, but his defense can present itself as a big problem for the Warriors. Kerr and his coaching staff will have to figure out a lot of things coming into the new season if they want to compete for a championship.
