The NBA season already started, and Carmelo Anthony is still without a team that would be interested in his services. Carmelo is a 12-time NBA all-star and one of the most gifted scorers in the league’s history. Despite all these facts, teams are no longer looking at him as an option even to come off the bench for 15-20 minutes per game. Former NBA players Stephen Jackson and Matt Barnes are convinced he is excluded from the league even though he is still more than capable of providing solid minutes.
In their podcast Showtime Basketball, Jackson said Carmelo is still better than 60 percent of the players in the NBA. Jackson is convinced they are doing the same thing he had to go through alongside Allen Iverson. The reason for that is the fact they are not “company guys” as Jackson describes.
“It’s the same situation they did to a lot of players. They put him in a situation they know he is not going to succeed. Make him look like he doesn’t know how to play no more. Make him look like he is cancer and just pushes him out. Once they get you to that point where you are cancer and feel like you can’t play anymore, it’s a mass text that is sent out to every team saying, “don’t f**k with him.” It happened to A.I., it happened to me, it happened to a lot of guys, and it’s definitely happening to Melo. Melo ain’t a company guy; he’s never been a company guy. He will speak his mind, and he will march to the beat of his own drums, and they don’t like that at times. Melo is better than 60 percent of players in the NBA right now, and this is personal. He definitely belongs in the NBA, and he definitely got blackballed, it ain’t no secret.”
Carmelo is a gifted scorer capable of helping teams that need more firepower on their roster. Indeed, he is not a reliable defender, but, in the right system, his skill set can be useful for a team looking for someone with tremendous experience and ability to drop 20 points with ease on a nightly basis. There were rumors the Lakers and his good friend LeBron are interested in signing Carmelo, but this is still far from becoming a reality. It will be interesting to see if a team will gamble and bring Carmelo back. We’re also confident he can still be productive within the right system.
