When it comes to Olympic basketball, there is no better team than Team USA. Since 1936, the USA’s men’s team has won an astonishing 15 out of 19 tournaments, assembling some of the best basketball teams we have ever seen, filled with numerous NBA stars. Every Olympic cycle, they are some of the biggest celebrities in the Olympic village and the main attraction on the court.
So it is no surprise when you combine all that commotion with the added honor of representing your country and winning an Olympic gold medal that almost all the stars want to play. But recently, that hasn’t been the case, with numerous NBA stars canceling their duties and taking the time to rest due to the hectic schedule of the season.
This year’s Olympics will be no different, as stars like LeBron James and Anthony Davis have already stated they will not play. But another big name has come up in the mix, and that is Warriors point guard and one of the best shooters ever, Stephen Curry.
Curry hasn’t played for the USA since the World Cup in Spain, back in 2014, where he won a gold medal. Curry was also a part of the 2010 team that won the World Cup in Turkey. But when it comes to the Olympics, Steph hasn’t made an appearance. Is this the year? Well, even Curry himself hasn’t decided yet, as he admitted in an interview with the San Franciso Chronicle:
“I’m literally 50-50. I probably need to decide in the next two weeks.”Steph Curry, San Francisco Chronicle
Curry is still weighing his options, as he is curious to see what kind of team will be assembled and if his health will serve him well. After all, he has been enjoying a more extended offseason due to the Warriors missing the Playoffs. The 33-year old Curry has shown he is still playing at a peak level, averaging 32 points per game, but the Warriors would want their star to rest up and be ready for the following season in order to compete for a ring again.
But on the other side, an Olympic gold medal is one of the rare accomplishments Curry hasn’t managed to achieve, and with 33 years on his back, this could very well be his last chance. Team USA team could definitely use that boost, as a player of Curry’s caliber would make the hunt for the gold so much easier. After all, not many stars outside of Damian Lillard have shown too much interest in playing, so every big name they can get will be of enormous importance for the Americans.
