Shaquille O’Neal was a force on the basketball courts and one of the most dominant players to ever play in the NBA. Despite having a great career, there is often a notion that he could have done more in terms of winning or scoring more points. Kobe Bryant said that if Shaq worked as hard as Bryant did in practice, they could have won more championships together. Shaq, on the other hand, doesn’t care about what other people think, and he believes he had an enjoyable and successful career he never even dreamed of having.
In an interview with Graham Bensinger, Shaq talks about the three biggest regrets in his career. Even though he achieved a lot, Shaq said there were a few things he wishes he had down differently or better.
“Missing 5000 free throws. Not passing up Wilt Chamberlain in points and not being higher on the scoring list. Those are my only three regrets.”
Shaq further explains that he was never aiming to be the best player in NBA history, but he wanted to be the most dominant one. In his mind, the only real rival he had was Wilt Chamberlain, who is still to this day considered to be the most dominant player in basketball history, who’s records still stand to this day, and some of them will never be broke. Shaq wanted to pass him on the all-time scoring list but fell short after an injury during his time with the Boston Celtics.
“When it comes to basketball conversations, I’m very arrogant. So when they say who is the most dominant player ever, I want them to say my name. I don’t want them to say maybe Wilt, maybe Shaq. That don’t fly with me, I wanted them to say Shaq. That bothers me because that was my niche. I wasn’t going for the greatest player. I wasn’t going for the best; I wasn’t going for that because those words are just thrown out. Words like the most dominant, you got to earn that. When I got really close to Wilt, I needed to average 12 points my last year in Boston, and I would pass him up. When I had a career-ending injury, I was like damn, I’m not going to pass Wilt. So those are my only three regrets. I have no other regrets since I have four rings when I only wanted one.”
