The Los Angeles Angeles are currently sitting on the 7th spot in a very competitive western conference, and as it seems right now, they will participate in the play-in tournament. Of course, that wasn’t the plan for the Lakers a few months ago when they were the leading team in the western conference. Still, the injuries of LeBron James and Anthony Davis affected their roster and ability to win games which put the team in a pretty difficult spot heading into the playoffs.
Lakers legend and current NBA analyst Shaquille O’Neal shared his opinion on the Lakers and what he would do if he was in LeBron’s place right now. Other members on that squad need to step up and produce big numbers if the Lakers want to win the remaining games in the regular season. According to Shaq, LeBron needs to hold other players more accountable and let them know they need to be more consistent if they want another shot at a championship title. Guys like Kyle Kuzma, KCP, and others need to accept their roles and maximize their efforts.
If I was LeBron, I would come in and said we are in the 7th spot, that is the play-in, and that is embarrassing. I’m going to be back in one or two games, and I need one or two guys to step up. Kyle, what are you going to do? KCP, what are you going to do? The thing I don’t like about Kuzma is that he has games like this every now or then, and we need this from him every night. We all know the Lakers one-two punch is AD and LeBron but guess what? They get so much attention you will be able to shine.Shaquille O’Neal, via NBA on TNT
Shaq is very critical of the Lakers and describes their current situation as embarrassing. Even though he acknowledges injuries played a significant role in their recent struggles, Shaq believes they shouldn’t use that as an excuse for their current situation. Shaq wants LeBron to step up as a leader and stress out how vital it is for other members of the Lakers to bring their A-game moving forward.
Right now, the Lakers are the champs, they are in the play-in position, and everybody is talking about them, and that is embarrassing. They need to focus on getting to that sixth spot. Real champions, we don’t want to hear about no excuses. I know they had injuries, but for them to be in the play-in is embarrassing, and If I was LeBron, I would come to everybody and be like, what are you going to do?Shaquille O’Neal, via NBA on TNT
The Lakers still have a chance of avoiding the play-in tournament, but only if they win every game left in the regular season. Supposedly, LeBron is back in their next game against the Rockets, which is definitely a good sign for the Lakers. However, they will also play against the Pacers and the Pelicans, and those are the games they need to win if they want to avoid playing the Warriors in the play-in tournament.
