Shaquille O’Neal said he wouldn’t take Zion Williamson as the first pick in the draft

This year’s NBA draft featured a lot of young and talented players ready to make the next step in their basketball careers. Prior to the draft night, it was already known Zion Williamson would be the first pick and a new franchise player for the New Orleans Pelicans who decided to part ways with Anthony Davis. The franchise from New Orleans turned Anthony Davis into a couple of young players and draft picks and with Zion, on board you can definitely say they have the potential to compete on a nightly basis.

Even though it was known for months that Zion would go down as the first pick in the draft, there are several former players and analysts who would take a different direction if they were the GM’s of a franchise. Shaquille O’Neal is one of those people and in a recent interview for the Complex he was asked whether he would choose Zion or someone else and O’Neal’s response came as a surprise in some way.

Shaq said he would actually go with Bol Bol, the son of the former NBA player Manute Bol, who is still to this day one of the tallest players to ever play in the league.  Bol Bol played for Oregon University and showed versatility rarely seen in a player with that kind of size. He injured his left foot which left him sidelined for the rest of the season and it was the main reason he was drafted as the 44th pick by the Denver Nuggets.

“I don’t even think I would go with Zion. Believe it or not, I would go with Bol Bol because he and Shareef are friends and I have seen the potential this kid can do. For example, when I was his coach at the AUU games we never lost. He got it all. He is 7′ 2″, he can shoot, he can dribble, he can pass but nobody really knows because he was always hurt. Zion is a dunker and he won’t be able to do all that. I was bad in high school, and I was a man in college but as soon as I got in the NBA I was number 50. I know he is a powerful dunker but he will have to develop something else.”
