Shaquille O’Neal proved on multiple occasions he is larger than life and indeed a unique persona in NBA history. Apart from being one of the most accomplished and dominant NBA players, Shaq always had numerous side passions projects throughout the years. He is now a successful entrepreneur that manages several multi-million dollar businesses and has a personal interest in domains that are not even remotely related to basketball.
One of them is being a DJ, which Shaq started doing actively a few years ago, and according to him, it provides a lot of satisfaction and happiness for him now that he is retired from the NBA. In a recent interview with Dash Radio just before one of his performances, ‘Big Diesel’ opened up about his love for music and being a DJ and how he decided to pursue that career after finishing his NBA journey.
After I retired in 2011, I don’t like to use the word depressed, but I was just feeling similar. I was dating a girl, and she took me to Tomorrow world, and I’ve never seen anything like that in my life. I’ve been on all the rappers’ concerts, it was half a million people out there jamming, and I was like, I figure I can do this. So I started from the bottom. Big clubs, I did small shows, and you know I worked my way up. I think it was Lostlands where I had to replace somebody, and I killed it at Lostlands. So now I get to do big shows like this.Shaquille O’Neal, via Dash Radio
Shaq played in numerous crucial playoff and NBA Finals games, and for him, those were the best because of the pure adrenaline rush and the need to come on top against the best teams in the league. DJ-ing and being in large crowds that react to his music brings excitement for Shaq even though he admits he is losing money. Connecting with people through his music brings incredible joy and happiness he only felt when winning all those NBA titles.
For me, it just gives me that re-adrenaline rush that I miss. I lose money, and it’s not about the money. For me to come out here for an hour and see these kids jumping and banging their heads that reminds me of a game 7, and I can’t get that feeling nowhere else ever.Shaquille O’Neal, via Dash Radio
There are videos online showing Shaq participating in parties and raves with thousands of people, and even though he stands out from everyone with his 7’1, 350-pound frame, he somehow manages to blend in perfectly. Shaq explained why he loves rave parties and interacting with fans, saying the energy on those shows is something truly majestic and one-of-a-kind experience everyone should try at least once in their life.
In raves, they come to do one thing, and that is to have a good time. In playoff games they come to do one thing, and that is watch you win a championship. So the energy is there, the crowd is there, I like to interact with the fans. Every now or then, I go to the mosh pit and jump with the kids, and I have a lot of fun doing this.Shaquille O’Neal, via Dash Radio
Even though Shaq is almost 50, he enjoys life in the best way possible doing the things he loves doing, with DJ-ing being one of those things. He has several shows booked for the near future, and it seems he found peace and somewhat excitement in his new music career, which is truly inspiring. You don’t see such an iconic giant standing behind a DJ table playing tunes in front of several hundred thousand people.
