One of the most controversial and talked about topics of this NBA season has been the hectic schedule or, more specifically, all the injuries that came out of this busy season. After the pandemic caused a stoppage of the last season, everything got scrambled, and the NBA was faced with the difficult task of rescheduling everything back to normal. After the bubble, players wanted to take a more extended break, but the NBA had no time for that, as money had to be made.
So the NBA start for the 2021 season was set for late December with 72 games to be played, and even though the players led by LeBron James were protesting at first, after finding out how much money they were going to lose, they backed off. Now we are at the very end of the whole season, and the result of this tight schedule has been numerous injures, especially to the stars.
The effect has mostly been noticed in the Playoffs, as a record number of All-Stars have missed time in the playoffs due to injuries. From Chris Paul, Anthony Davis, James Harden, Kyrie Irving, Kawhi Leonard, to most lately Trae Young and Giannis Antetokounmpo, players have suffered injuries and left their teams searching for answers. It has led to one of the most unusual postseasons ever, in which the final four teams are primarily underdogs. But they managed to stay the healthiest, and as things are looking, the team that survives without losing their players will be the champion of this crazy season.
LeBron James has never been the one to shy away from speaking his opinion and being vocal about things that bother him. Lately, he has been calling out the NBA frequently, telling them how he knew this would happen due to the busy schedule.
Even though he has a point, NBA legend Shaquille O’Neal decided to fire back at LeBron for his comments and offer a different perspective on the topic, reminding him there is a real-world out there with real-world problems he knows nothing about:
“When you’re living in a world where 40 million people have been laid off and I’m making $200 million, you won’t get no complaining from me. I’d play back to back to back to back to back. I’m not knocking what anybody said, but me personally, I don’t complain and make excuses, because real people are working their tail off and all we gotta do is train two hours a day and then play a game for two hours at night and make a lot of money … So my thought process is a little different.”Shaquille O’Neal, CNBC
Even though he is already well-loved in the NBA world, Shaq got major respect from all the fans worldwide for this statement. NBA players are making ridiculous amounts of money, and in the process forgetting how the real world works. So for someone who has earned so much in his career to still think about the regular people fighting for their jobs and families is admirable. Shaq has displayed on numerous occasions his generosity, gifting, and helping out other people, as this statement just proved how much of a good guy he really is.
On the other hand, while it sucks to have so many players get injured, LeBron James has to understand that numerous people around the world get hurt doing their job, but they don’t get paid like him if it happens. Most of them even lose their job because of it. That’s the real world. Suck it up and earn your money.
