Jeanie Buss recently made a guest appearance on the All The Smoke podcast in which she talked about the greatest Lakers of all time. She included Kobe Bryant, Magic, LeBron, Phil Jackson, and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar on this list and left out a few legends that might deserve to be there instead of some of the names she mentioned. One of those players is Shaquille O’Neal, who spent 8 years with the Lakers, and won 3 championships during his time with the team in purple and gold.
On his podcast ‘The Big Podcast with Shaq,’ he responded to Jeanie Buss, leaving him out of her list in a surprising way. Shaq is known as someone who is constantly critical of people who disrespect his legacy and his name, but this time he wasn’t so combative. Instead, he said he respects other people’s opinions, especially Jeanie Buss, because of their relationship in the past. Everyone has different views about specific topics, and Shaq stressed out it’s essential for people to respect what other people think even though we don’t perhaps agree with them, which he learned later in his life.
I’m 49 years old, and for the past 10 years, you have to respect other people’s opinion even if their opinion is not yours. I love Jeannie Buss, and I would never say anything negative about Jeannie Buss. She gave me $120 million. I will never ever in my life say anything negative about Jeannie Buss and the Buss family. That is her opinion. We as people need to respect other people’s opinions without having a further conversations. I don’t want to have fights, and I’m glad my name is mentioned, period. I’m glad my statue is in front of Staples Center, and my jersey is hanging there.Shaquille O’Neal, via Big Podcast with Shaq
Shaq said his response would be much different if he was 20 years younger because he found peace and learned how to deal with opposing opinions. It’s definitely a surprise Jeanie Buss put LeBron on that list, and even Shaq said he would object that simply because LeBron hasn’t been with the Lakers for such a long time and his accomplishments are not close to Shaq’s.
I’m not mad about that. That is her opinion and if you ask other people name would warry. At 49, I’m a lot more peaceful than I was. If I was 29, I would be like, hold on, LeBron has only been there for 720 days, and you are going to put him in front of me?Shaquille O’Neal, via Big Podcast with Shaq
Even though the Lakers as a franchise had several notorious players in their history, most fans would probably put Shaq on the list of their greatest players. But, on the other hand, LeBron doesn’t deserve to be on that list just yet, and Jeanie Buss mentioned his name out of respect because he is still on the Lakers, and he did win one championship for their franchise. It will take more than one championship to be on the list of top five players in Lakers history, and it will be hard for LeBron to achieve that considering he’s 36 and at the end of his NBA career.
