Shaq’s presence and character made him a larger-than-life personality, both literally and figuratively. Being one of the most dominant centers in NBA history, combined with his business and Hollywood persona, ensured him making a fortune during and after his career, managing a pretty big net worth.
Most NBA stars have so much money nowadays that they don’t know where to spend it all. Ridiculous purchases are a thing of normality in their luxurious world, but Shaquille O’Neal took it to another level back in 2008 while shopping in your friendly neighborhood store Walmart.
After being traded to the Phoenix Suns in 2008, Shaq decided to make a night trip to Walmart to arrange his empty apartment with all the necessities and maybe some extra luxuries. Shaq ended up spending $70000 in the process and getting his card declined, as his bank thought his credit card got stolen. Shaq told the story of that night on the James Corden Show back in 2018:
“I have the biggest purchase in Walmart history, $70,000. I get traded from Miami to Phoenix, and I’m the type of guy [that] I have no patience. So when I get to Phoenix, they have an apartment for me. Nothing’s in it…At the end, it was $70,000, so I put my credit card in. Got declined. And I put it back in, [it] said declined again. So now I’m saying, ‘I know I’m not broke.”Shaquille O’Neal, via The Late Show with James Corden
It would turn out American Express turned off his credit card due to suspecting somebody stole his card because of the untypical purchase. Shaq would notify the bank it is him and finalize his shopping spree. Shaq bought numerous TVs, laptops, printers, towels, clothes, and much more, but it is still a mystery how he managed to round it up to 70000. It must feel good to be able to spend such an amount of money like it’s pocket change.
