Draft day trades are often some of the most remembered and crucial trades an NBA team can make, as sometimes the simplest swap of rookies ends up rearranging the picture and history of the NBA dramatically. One of those trades happened in 2018 between Luka Dončić and Trae Young, who swapped teams during the draft. As it looks now, that will go down in history because of the high possibility these two become two of the biggest names of the NBA in the near future.
One of the more notable draft day trades happened back in 1987. Scottie Pippen got drafted fifth by the Seattle SuperSonics but got traded shortly after to the Chicago Bulls for Olden Polynice, who was drafted 8th overall by the Bulls. As the Bulls were eying Pippen even before the draft, this was the perfect deal that would prove to be vital in the making of their 90’s dynasty.
Pippen went down in history as the second most iconic Chicago Bull of all time behind Michael Jordan, winning six championships alongside him, spending 12 seasons in Chicago, establishing himself as one of the best small forwards to ever play, and cementing his name in the history books. But it is wild to think how different his career would have been if he stayed with Seattle.
While doing an interview on The Dan Patrick Show, Pippen talked about numerous and various controversial topics, creating headlines and dragging Jordan and Phil Jackson into the picture. Dan mentioned the draft-day trade that happened in 1987 and asked Scottie about his possible career if he remained a SuperSonic.
“I would have some pretty good teammates, especially if we would have still landed Shawn Kemp, Gary Payton, you know it is a team that we played in the Finals, so that sort of fit.”Scottie Pippen, The Dan Patrick Show
When Dan asked if it would have been fun to go against Michael with that team, Pippen responded with a dig at his former teammate:
“That would have been a lot of fun. I don’t know if he would have made it that far…You know what I mean. I’m just saying.”Scottie Pippen, The Dan Patrick Show
Dan couldn’t help but burst out laughing as Pippen gave him one of the juiciest and controversial interviews we have heard in a long time. It is obvious Pippen is fed up with the glorifying of Michael Jordan and his label as the side-kick, and this year he has decided to speak his stance and tell it how he sees it in numerous interviews and the book “UNGUARDED,” that is coming out later this year. It will be a must-read, as plenty of stories and digs like this about MJ and other parts of the 90’s Bulls will come out. We can’t wait for it.
