Scottie Pippen still holds a grudge against Barkley – “I never apologized to him”

After winning their 6th NBA title in ’98, the rebuilding Chicago Bulls traded Scottie Pippen to the Houston Rockets, pairing him up with Hakeem Olajuwon and Charles Barkley.

On paper, this sounds like a monster team. But the fact is, both Hakeem and Chuck were in their mid-30s, way past their prime, with not many miles left in their legs. An old Rockets team eventually lost 3-1 to the Shaq & Kobe Lakers, resulting in another Scottie Pippen trade request – this time to the Purple and Gold – and the 33-year-old forward blamed Barkley for it.

I probably should’ve listened to Michael [Jordan] a year ago when he said that Charles will never win a championship because he doesn’t show any dedication. He’s a very selfish guy. He doesn’t show the desire to want to win. That’s my reason for wanting to get away from playing with him -because he just doesn’t show the dedication.

This comment happened after Barkley said Pippen owes him an apology. He was disappointed and criticized Pippen for the trade request. But Scottie made it clear — apology was off the table.

I wouldn’t give Charles Barkley an apology at gunpoint. If anything, he owes me an apology for coming to play with his fat butt.

A while later, during a postgame interview, Barkley was asked about Pippen’s comments. “I always carry a gun with me,” he said. “I’m going to go to my truck and get my gun and see. So if I get arrested for murder ya’ll know he didn’t apologize.”

Now, over two decades later, during his interview with GQ’s Tyler R. Tynes, Pippen was once again asked about calling Barkley fat as well as Chuck saying he would “get arrested for murder” if Pip didn’t apologize for his words. Here’s what the Hall of Famer had to say:

I wish he woulda went through with it. I never apologized to him, but I’ll tell you what: He only got arrested for throwing some little white guys out of a window. I ain’t never seen him fight a Black man unless there were referees around. He plays his role like he’s tough. I don’t know nobody he done whooped. Go back and check his record. Did I apologize to him? I told him to get me the hell out of there. That’s what I recall.

Ouch! It looks like Pip still holds a grudge against his former teammate. There’s nothing left to do but wait for Barkley to respond!
