Rod Strickland describes his relationship with Derrick Rose and what makes him unique in the NBA

Former NBA player Rod Strickland is probably one of the most underrated guards from the ’90s and a true hooper that had some of the flashiest moves on the court. Strickland made a guest appearance on the Heavy podcast, where he talked about multiple things from his playing and coaching career. He touched upon his relationship with Derrick Rose, who managed to make a comeback after having a career-ending injury back in 2012 when he tore his ACL.

After spending a lot of his time with Rose, Strickland saw many similarities between the two. According to Strickland, something people don’t know about Rose is that he is unbelievably humble and doesn’t come off as a superstar. He never got accustomed to the superstar lifestyle, where he had to talk to the media all the time and just wanted to play basketball.

Derrick Rose is probably one of the best people I’ve ever been around in my entire life. One of the most humble guys. He is incredible, and I’ve watched him grow and mature. Derrick Rose reminded me a lot of me. He wasn’t really comfortable in the limelight. He didn’t really want to talk, and he just wanted to play basketball. Now that you hear him speak, he is comfortable.

Strickland saw firsthand the progress Rose made after his injury and all the hard work he put in to get back in the NBA. The mindset Rose had was the same one he had during his MVP season when he was the best player in the league. According to Strickland, Rose didn’t lose much of his explosiveness and is almost the same player as he was in his MVP season, but the difference is that now he is more experienced and knowledgeable about the game.

Derrick Rose is a competitor, and he wants to be that guy. Once he got injured, he pushed a lot. He was trying to show people he was that MVP. When I watched him play, and I always told people that he didn’t lose his step, he could still jump. He might have lost a little vertical, but he didn’t lose much. Derrick Rose is Derrick Rose still to this day, he is one of the best.

Rose had a very productive season with the Pistons, where he averaged 18 points per game to go along with five assists in only 26 minutes of action. He was one of the brightest spots for the Pistons, and there are were moments where he had flashes of his former self during his MVP days. Rose has another year left on his contract with the Pistons. There are reports that several championship-contending teams are interested in his services, which might be an excellent next step in his career if he wants to have an NBA title.
