Robert Horry: “Michael Jordan was scared of Hakeem Olajuwon back in the day”

The only player who was able to win championships during the reign of Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls in the ’90s was Hakeem Olajuwon when he won two consecutive championships with the Houston Rockets. There is a lot of debate among fans even to this day whether the Rockets would have won those championships if Jordan didn’t retire from the game of basketball during those two seasons.

Robert Horry who was Hakeem’s teammate in Houston said there is no doubt in his mind the Rockets would have been successful against the Bulls even with Jordan on their roster simply because the Bulls wouldn’t be able to stop Hakeem. Horry also said it’s no coincidence many NBA stars come to Hakeem looking for various pieces of advice in order to improve their game and especially footwork which was an essential part of his game.

“You should know how good Hakeem Olajuwon was when you see the guys like LeBron, Kobe all these guys go to him for advice and how to have his footwork. This guys footwork is one of the most amazing footwork you will ever see and his tenacity in the gym was even bigger than in games. That is what you want and it’s coming to practice and playing really really hard because in games you have timeouts and in practices, you don’t have all these timeouts. It goes to show you how great this guy was and if you ask Michael Jordan who was the one guy he feared it was Hakeem Olajuwon. He used to say that he was scared of the big African because he is from Nigeria. A lot of Chicago fans always asked if we would win that two championships we won at Houston and the answer is yes because they couldn’t stop Olajuwon. We might not be able to stop Jordan, but they couldn’t stop Olajuwon and to answer your questions yes, we would beat the Bulls even if Jordan played.”
