The offseason hasn’t even started, but it looks like the drama and speculations are already begging to heat up. Apparently, a source close to Damian Lillard has said that Dame will be requesting a trade from the Portland TrailBlazers in the coming days. This bomb of a headline was reported by Henry Abbott via Twitter, as the news quickly got around the NBA world.
This chain of events was expected, as the Blazers and Lillard have had some turmoil around them ever since they disappointingly lost to the undermanned Denver Nuggets in the first round. When Lillard saw that a 55 point-game from him isn’t enough to win them the game, it was apparent frustrations started to kick in. The Blazers’ downfall would continue with the firing of their long-time head coach Terry Stotts and the somewhat underwhelming hiring of rookie head coach Chauncey Billups.
The lackluster work in the front office, combined with continuous early playoff exits, started to culminate as Lillard was rumored to be on the way out. Even though he has been the staple for loyalty in the NBA, playing his whole career with the Blazers and stating on numerous occasions how he wants to finish his career out here, it seems even Dame has had enough.
At 31 years old, with 9 seasons behind him, averaging 24.7 ppg, 4.2 rpg, and 6.6 apg, notching 6 All-Star nods, Dame has proved to be amongst the elite players in this league. But if he wants to go down as a champion, Lillard could be somewhere else next season. A picture almost hard to imagine, knowing the long-time bond between Dame and the Blazers.
So, where could he go? The Lakers have been in the center of talks like always, trying to get any sort of package that will form a Big 3 of LeBron, AD, and Lillard. But with a player like Lillard on the block, anything is possible, as all the other 29 teams in the league will look at how they can bring him in. While Portland, on the other hand, will definitely be looking for something special in return. Either way, we have an interesting offseason in front of us.
