For the first time in their history, the Toronto Raptors have finally made it to the NBA finals where they will have a hard task against the Warriors. For the past couple of seasons, the Raptors were always so close yet so far from making it to the finals, mostly because of LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers. This year their roster improved dramatically mostly because of adding Kawhi Leonard and surrounding him with experienced players capable of making the run.
The creator of this team throughout the last couple of years was none other than Masai Ujiri, one of the most respected and knowledgable NBA executives in the league. He joined the Raptors in 2013, and from then on the team has been able to make the playoff and conference finals more frequently than ever before.
Despite losing to the Cavaliers last season, Masai never stopped believing in his plan and made the right moves in the right time. After they lost to the Cavaliers last season he made it clear to the reporters that his responsibility is to make the team better and make it to the finals next season.
“Now it’s my job, it’s on me, put it on me. Forget all the other stuff that you guys are talking about, put it on me. We’ll get better, we believe in this city, this country, this team here and move forward. I put it on myself. The most difficult time for me is watching the playoffs. I think for people in our position it’s just difficult to watch it because you are helpless. Now it’s the time that I can work, our front office can work.”
Masai fulfilled his promise and made the right moves which proved to be detrimental for the team’s success this season and they are not over yet. With four more wins the Raptors can secure the first NBA championship in their franchise history and beat all the odds that are against them in this series against the Warriors
