The story of Jason Terry getting a Larry O’Brien Trophy tattoo before the Mavs championship season in 2011

We all know NBA players are never short on confidence or making bold claims, but back in 2011 “The Jet” Jason Terry took it to another level.

Back in 2010, before the start of the 2011 season, Terry along with his Mavs teammate DeShawn Stevenson (known for his many tattoos) went to Stevenson’s personal tattoo artist as a part of a team-building exercise.

That was when Terry decided to get the Larry O’Brien Trophy tattooed on his right biceps, as a motivation for himself and his teammates to win it all that year.

Stevenson thought he was crazy at first, but after beating the Thunder in the Western Conference Finals, he started to see where Terry confidence came from:

“When he first got the tattoo, I said he was crazy. I didn’t say it to him. But I’ve never been to the [NBA Finals], and for him to have that now. Wow. And he got that tattoo in October, and it means a lot with what we’ve been through.”

Terry himself said he didn’t only do it because he of motivation, but because he genuinely believed that team was destined for the championship:

“Everybody laughed and they thought it was a joke at the time. When they actually see me get it, they were like, ‘This boy is serious.’ And our whole talk and conversation was about right now, about us getting to this point and winning it all.”

And as we all know, the Mavericks would go on and beat the favorized Miami Heat in 6 games, as Terry would play a major part.

It was a historic first championship for Dirk Nowitzki and sweet revenge for Dirk and Terry, that were the only remaining members of the team that lost to them back in the 2006 Finals when they were the favorites.

Some would say this was a bold, confident or even stupid move by Jason Terry, but in the end, it paid off for him, as it probably lifted him and his team mentally and made them work harder to get to the ultimate goal and also made it one of the coolest stories ever.
