The NBA world is buzzing about James Harden's 61-point performance from last night against the New York Knicks at the Madison Square Garden. Harden is having a phenomenal season and is the leading candidate for the MVP award this season.

However, this is not the story about Harden but about a player that is also one of the most versatile scorers in NBA history currently without a team. You might have guessed it right, it's Carmelo Anthony and on this date 5 years ago he delivered the most remarkable scoring performance in Madison Square Garden history.

While playing for the New York Knicks in a home win against the Charlotte Hornets, Carmelo Anthony scored an astonishing career high of 62 points, putting on an absolute clinic for all the fans in attendance. This is still the greatest scoring performance in the most popular basketball arena.

Anthony surpassed Kobe Bryant's 61-point performance and Bernard King's franchise record when 60 point performance. Anthony was shooting 23 from 35 from the field, hitting 6 out of 11 three-pointers. He also grabbed 13 rebounds and had 0 assists on the night.

"I was just taking it one possession at a time. I came into the game locked in. I didn't know I was going to have this type of performance. It's an unbelievable feeling. ... It's just a zone you get into sometimes. Only a certain group of people know what that zone feels like. Tonight was one of those zones. My teammates saw that."

"It didn't really sink in exactly what I did tonight. I know Bernard King is somewhere smiling at me right now."

What is, even more, crazier about this performance is that Carmelo Anthony exited the game at the 7:22 mark in the fourth quarter and that point the Knicks were leading by over 30 points. Carmelo could have easily even scored 70 or even more points that night but he decided the Hornets had enough that night.

Carmelo Anthony started this season as a member of the Houston Rockets but it's worth mentioning he is not the same player as he was over five years ago when he was in his absolute prime. At the moment it seems there are isn't a single NBA team interested in Carmelo's services and scoring ability simply because he is a real liability on defense.

Nevertheless, if used correctly Carmelo is still able to score 15 or even 20 points on a nightly basis and when in his zone could be a dangerous weapon for any team in the NBA.
