Luc Longley shares why he never liked Michael Jordan personally

michael jordan & luc longley

In the recent documentary 'Australian Story' that came out a week ago, we had the opportunity to see Luc Longley's side of the story that wasn't featured in 'The Last Dance'. This docu-series is interesting because it gives a more in-depth look into the origin story of Luc Longley and how he looked at the Chicago Bulls and his relationship with Michael Jordan.

Something that might come of as a surprise to some people, but Longley openly admits that he never liked Jordan that much. He talked about what he had to go through to fit in well within the team and how he was an entirely different personality than Jordan, which made things harder initially.

We had to figure out how to be together, and that wasn't his priority; it was mine. I'm deeply thankful to MJ for showing me how to be a better basketballer. For compensating for my weaknesses with his brilliance.

Longley openly said that he never liked Jordan that much for various reasons, even though there was a lot of respect between them. He also stressed out that you don't have to be friends to be great teammates because at the end of the day, you are both doing your job and competing for the same goal, which is teams success.

You don't have to love a bloke to be on his team, to care about him, to play basketball together. I didn't love MJ, and I thought MJ was difficult and unnecessarily harsh on his teammates and probably on himself. I just didn't enjoy being around him that much, and that was cool. It was cool to MJ, it was cool with me. At the end of the day, we found a way to respect each other on the court and to co-exist, and that was cool.

It's great we had the opportunity to hear Longley's side of the story about his relationship with Jordan and how he perceived him as a person and a basketball player. Even though they never completely clicked personally, the respect for each other was there, and that is all that matters. They both worked as a group where personal things are put aside because of the primary focus, winning an NBA championship - something they did with dominance rarely seen in professional sport.
