Debating and talking about who the greatest player of all time is always a topic that will stir a conversation and get the ears to listen, no matter who is talking. Michael Jordan and LeBron James are your standard picks, but if you ask the old-school guys, there are more names in the conversation.

Dr. J. shares his pick

Julius Erving, better known as Dr. J., may not be in the GOAT conversation, but he is still regarded as one of the biggest legends in NBA history. The athleticism, flash, and style Julius brought to the ABA/NBA were ahead of their time and a big reason why the coming generations got inspired watching him work.

That's why a lot of players from Erving's era and the ones after him have huge respect for the Doctor and his opinion. So when Julius got asked who he thinks the GOAT was a few years ago, everybody listened closely to hear his take. Erving feels you have to divide the title between two big men.

"I think Bill Russell is the greatest champion. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar is probably the greatest player in the history of the game. That's a fan's argument...I'll go with those two."

Julius Erving, The Universe Galaxy NBA

Julius obviously really respects his elders, as he is one of many players from the 70s' who holds Bill Russell on a higher pedestal than the younger generations. After all, they witnessed him winning those eleven rings and impacting the game in an unprecedented way. But Russell's individual quality wasn't what made him stand out, but he had the perfect skill set for the Celtics roster at that time.

That's why Erving differentiates him from Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, who, in his eyes, was the best individual of all time. However, Kareem was also a huge winner, but not on Bill's level. Jabbar had the immaculate post skill and ability to get the ball in the bucket throughout his whole career, leading to him having a lengthy, productive career and being the leading scorer in NBA history. At least until LeBron catches him.

Also, with Kareem being good friends with Julius during their careers led to mutual respect, as it is no surprise that the Doctor views Cap as the best individual player of all time over the likes of MJ and LeBron.
