Carmelo Anthony reveals how close the Knicks were to getting LeBron James

In the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, the United States men's Olympic basketball team known as the "Redeem Team" won the gold medal. And after that tournament, the players started to talk about teaming up in the NBA. The superstars wanted to play with each other as they did in the Olympics.

One member of that team, Carmelo Anthony, said that players liked the way they've played for the national team and that they've had conversations about linking in the same teams. Wojnarowski asked Melo if he thinks that if the things played differently, could the 'Big Three' in Miami be James, Wade, and Anthony.

"It probably would have been me and LeBron somewhere and D-Wade and Bosh somewhere. The talk was where can we go and partner up at. We wanted to experience playing with other great players. There were a lot of options and conversations out there, and then you start to bring Chris Paul into the mix. Those were random conversations, but we thought what would that be like. Prior to that, everybody had their own team. I had Denver, Bron had Cleveland, D-Wade had Miami, CP was in New Orleans, AI in Philly, Kobe in the Lakers... Nobody was really teaming up like that. And of all of us, I've felt most confident about my situation in Denver. We were winning; we were building, so I didn't want to sign a three-year deal, I wanted to be there long term."

We know how the story went after, Melo went to the Knicks, and James, Wade, and Bosh went to the Heat. However, Wojnarowski wanted to know where LeBron and Carmelo would pair up if things went another way.

"I honestly don't know. It could've been New York. It could've been Miami; it could've been a way for all four of us to go to Miami. But, I just don't know where could've it been."

Who knows what would've happened if Melo and LeBron paired up in the Big Apple? Would've we witnessed a renaissance in the Knicks organization, or would LeBron be missing a couple of rings? Tough to say, but Melo's words confirm what Knicks fans have heard so many times.

They were really close to landing a superstar. It's almost as if players don't want to play for James Dolan...
