"Awww baby baby we belong together!!!" - When Keldon Johnson revealed he listens to Mariah Carey every day
Apart from housing arguably the best trio in history (Tim Duncan, Manu Ginobili, and Tony Parker) and winning the NBA title five times, the San Antonio Spurs are also known for one thing – knowing how to have fun amid an exhausting season.
Out of nowhere, the Spurs PR team would pull off fun gimmicks on social media, and more often than not, it’s epic. They once managed to get WWE superstar and Hollywood actor Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson to take part, and in February 2021, the team received a satisfying acknowledgment from music icon Mariah Carey.
Keldon is not a casual Mariah Carey fan
It was Valentines, and the Spurs had some players vibe and sing to MC’s 2005 hit “We Belong Together.” As expected, guys like Dejounte Murray and then-Spurs star DeMar DeRozan did a terrible job singing the song as they didn’t know the exact lyrics. However, one guy that stood out was Keldon Johnson. Among the Spurs who jammed to the MC hit, only Johnson got the lyrics right. And yes, the melody and timing as well.

In the following game, the Spurs played “We Belong Together” inside the arena during warm-ups. Johnson, who was singing the song while warming up, put on an impressive performance as San Antonio thumped the Charlotte Hornets 122-110. He was the team’s third-best performer with 18 points and 8 rebounds in 31 minutes of action.
As it turned out, that game wasn’t the first time “Mustang” rocked to “We Belong Together” before a game. Johnson revealed that he has been listening to the Mariah Carey song “everyday” and every pre-game. In fact, he even admitted that the five-octave vocal range singer is his “favorite artist.”
“Oh, that’s everyday. That’s like a ‘must’ everyday…this has been goin’ on for like, so long,” Johnson said about listening to Carey’s “We Belong Together” after the game. “I swear…When they sent it to me I was like, ‘Yo man! That’s crazy’ ‘cause she’s like my favorite artist.”
Mariah liked it
For those who are wondering if Mariah noticed Johnson and the Spurs’ effort, she did. In fact, the award-winning singer was delighted by the entire hoopla, and most likely because of Johnson.
Carey retweeted the video and left a sweet remark, suggesting she liked it.
The next time we see Johnson pull off another remarkable performance, we already have an idea what kept him pumped up that day.
