The NBA is certainly not a place for the weak. It's not only a platform for superb basketball skills but also a playground for the tough guys who always like to play rough. For sure, most of us already have an idea who these guys are, and there's a great chance you also know that Charles Oakley is one of them.
Never hide Oak's drink
Some fans may not know it, but almost everybody in the league was aware that messing with Oakley is the last thing you would want to do. And for the record, Oak's teammates were not an exception.
NBA Hall of Famer Tracy McGrady, who played with Oakley with the Toronto Raptors, said he once witnessed Oak lose his temper and what happened next was something he would never forget.
According to T-Mac, the team was on a long flight, and Oakley had been drinking with a few teammates. When the group finally landed, Oak still wanted to drink and started quizzing the people on the bus to tell him where the last Jack Daniels bottle was.
Apparently, one of the players who didn’t want to drink anymore hid it. So when Oak found out, he literally poured the entire bottle on him.
“These boys got the big bottles of Jack Daniels,” McGrady said on “All The Smoke” podcast in 2020. “The whole plane ride, they’re drinking like crazy...We land in Sacramento, and Oak is looking for the last bottle. My man don’t even want to drink no more. So, he hid the bottle under his seat.”
“Oak walking up and down the bus on the way to the hotel [like] ‘Hey, man. Where the motherf—ing bottle at? Who got that last bottle?’ And, boy, somebody pointed at buddy. ‘Hey, where the motherf—ing bottle at? You hiding the bottles?’ Dog, Oak was looking around him, grabbed the bottle. Mind you, the dude is from Sacramento. Clean suit. He going home to see the fam. Big-a** bottle. ‘Oh, you trying to hide the bottle. Oh, you don’t want to drink no more? Alright, motherf—er, you’re going to wear this.’ And drenched it on him. The whole bottle, bro,” McGrady recalled.
T-Mac knows Oak is real
McGrady went on and said that, fortunately, things did not get ugly between Oakley and the player. Looking back at it now, T-Mac still got love for Oak as he was one of the realest persons he has ever met in the league.
“I’m 19 years old, I’m like, ‘Hey, man, I ain’t messing with this dude, bro.’ But I love that cat to death, though, because he’s ride or die for you,” McGrady concluded.
As for the anonymous former Raptor who got drenched with a liquor bottle, he learned that killing Oakley’s vibe was never a good idea.
