Anthony Davis might be one of the brightest stars we have in the NBA, but even he hasn't been nearly as much in the headlines as WNBA star Brittney Griner. Unfortunately for Griner, she has been in the spotlight for all the wrong reasons. What you may not know is that these two actually have a connection that dates back to nearly 10 years ago.
The Russian drama
Britney Griner was a name only WNBA fans and hardcore basketball fans knew well, as she has been one of the better players in the league for the past 9 years. Her athletic ability at 6'9'' really made her stand out from the jump, as her dunks and playstyle are something rarely seen in the WNBA.
Unfortunately for the 31-year-old Griner, her life took a drastic turn when she got arrested earlier this year in Russia for bringing cartridges with hashish oil into the country. The WNBA star has been locked up ever since, and she even recently got sentenced to nine years in prison.
Despite all the efforts from the NBA and WNBA to raise awareness of the situation and the involvement of President Biden and the government to negotiate a prisoner exchange, the situation has been on hold up, with no clear indication of the next step or what Griner's fate will be.
A rumor started floating around recently that the NBA star Anthony Davis and Brittney Griner used to date back in the day, even getting engaged. Although Griner has primarily been in relationships with women, after her divorce from fellow WNBA player Glory Johnson, Britney started dating Anthony Davis, a Pelicans star at the time.
Although it seemed like a good mix of two very talented basketball players, the relationship ended reasonably quickly without a valid reason for the split coming out. But even before their 2015 romantic stint, the two were rumored to be together in 2013, with even an engagement being in the mix. At that time, AD had to take to Twitter to deny the rumors.
Fast forward to 2022, and Anthony Davis has been married to Marlen Davis since last year, while Griner has married Cherelle Griner in 2019, who has been one of the loudest advocates in trying to bring her spouse back home. One thing is for sure, if AD and BG stayed together, they could have had some of the most athletic kids in sports history.
