Steven Adams looks menacing on and off the court, but he actually has a softer side. Once, he revealed he was stalking a KPop superstar IU and admitted wanting to be her friend.
Steven Adams visited South Korea in 2018 for some leisure and business activities like any other NBA player in the offseason. It was the first time the Kiwi saw the Asian country, and fans gave him the nickname "IU's friend" because Adams and the KPop superstar are of the same age. IU, or Lee Ji-Eun, is a KPop superstar who is a singer-songwriter and actress in South Korea.
Fans were fascinated at how Adams and IU are of similar age, given the height difference. The Rotorua, New Zealand native towers at 6'11" and weighs 250 pounds while the actress stands at 5'4" and weighs around 99 pounds. A reporter asked Adams if he were aware of his South Korean nickname. The NBA center, who was playing for the Oklahoma City Thunder then, claimed he was aware of it and even stalked IU on her social media pages.
Adams was born on July 20, 1993, while IU was born on May 16, 1993. South Koreans add a year to their actual age, so based on the country's traditions, Steven and IU are not of the same age. In South Korea, people of the same age are considered equals, an instant friend, or "chingu." Meanwhile, an older male or female can be addressed as Oppa, Noona, Hyung, or Unnie. Like any Asian country, South Koreans are very strict with respect and follow a uniform way of addressing older or younger strangers.
Steven Adams toured the country and played with South Korean basketball players. Because he was able to make some good memories there, it's not surprising if he makes another visit in the future. Fans and supporters of Hallyu stars could get overprotective with their idols, but in the case of Adams and IU, some even shipped the two together.
