"Each day you learned the education aspect" — Michael Jordan on the difference between his time and the internet era

Unsurprisingly, an old head like MJ isn’t having it with Twitter and social media.

Michael Jordan is famous for his basketball skills and savagery, but some may not know that behind the ultra-competitive player is a man who loved to connect with his family and friends.

Mike needed tangible connections

As we all know, Jordan peaked during an era when technology didn’t take over the world yet. Instead of scrolling and hitting the like button, people met in the flesh or sent letters to let their family and friends know how they feel. It was the norm "His Airness" was used to, and that type of connection was certainly what he relied on whenever he needed some inspiration.

"You had to live life as it came, you know, and each day you learned the education aspect, spending time with friends and family, it wasn't via the phone, you know, it was actually in presence and you wrote letters," Jordan told Good Morning America in 2020. "My mom, she kept all my letters. It's somewhat embarrassing, but yet it's refreshing that I took the time to write a letter to say how much I love my mom and, you know, what I needed in college."

The GOAT's thoughts on the internet

While there's nothing wrong with personal visits or writing and sending letters, it's hard to disagree that those old customs were meant to be enhanced and modernized to keep up with the fast-paced lifestyle we live these days. Let alone if you are an NBA player who flies from city to city throughout the entire season.

Fortunately, through social media, the internet allows us to reach out to pretty much everybody. However, like any other byproduct of modern technology, social media also has negative effects on people. So, unsurprisingly, an old head like MJ isn't having it with social media such as Twitter and all the other platforms.

"I don't know if I could've survived in this Twitter [era], where you don't have the privacy that you'd want and what seems to be very innocent can always be misinterpreted," Jordan once admitted.

Having heard Jordan's honest take on connecting with his family and friends without the help of modern technology, we now know how important it is for the GOAT to build and develop genuine and sincere interactions with people that matter to him. At the same time, we should also acknowledge and respect MJ's reasoning as to why he's not fond of social media.
