Kobe Bryant was a man of many gifts but also someone willing to put his time and energy into crafting the skill as much as possible. Apart from being one of the best basketball players in NBA history, Kobe spoke several world languages, won an Oscar, run successful businesses, and also learned how to play the piano. Bryant wanted to learn Beethoven's "Moonlight Sonata" for his wife, Vanessa. What is even more remarkable is that he did it by ear.
In one of his older interviews for The Undefeated, Bryant said he and Vanessa were going through their share of hardship in the relationship, so he wanted to give something that has a greater meaning to his wife. He didn't take any lessons and just tuned into the music until he figured out the melody.
"Sitting down and taking lessons would be too easy. So I taught myself by ear."..."If you just sit down and say, 'I'm going to learn this thing until I do, here's not really much out there that you can't figure out eventually."
During the memorial service for Kobe Bryant and the other victims of the tragic accident, Alicia Keys performed this piece in honor of Kobe. There was a lot of emotion on the air because everyone that knew him personally knew how much he admired classical music and especially this piece. Vanessa was especially emotional during this performance because that composition was something that connected her and Kobe on a different level.
