Joakim Noah and Phil Jackson

Retired center Joakim Noah is known not only for his elite defensive skills but also for his eccentricities. There was even a time when he went up to Montana to pay legendary coach Phil Jackson a visit sometime in 2011 or 2012. As for his reason? He didn't know either.

Bunking up

As it turned out, the two ended up spending the next few days together at Jackson's house. Noah did not expound on what went down during his stay, but one could assume that the topic of basketball had come up in any of their discussions.

At the time, Noah was still playing for the Chicago Bulls. Some years after hanging out with Jackson, the University of Florida developed into an All-Star and Defensive Player of the Year.

Of course, it's difficult to attribute Noah's achievements solely to Jackson. However, given that the longtime NBA coach and executive had been able to help many players during his time in the Association, it wouldn't be a surprise if he played a significant role in the big man's success.

Noah-Jackson reunion

Interestingly, the two would reunite in the 2016 offseason when Noah signed a four-year, $72 million contract with the New York Knicks. Jackson served as an executive for the organization then and was a proponent of Noah's acquisition.

The free agency signing was a question mark for numerous pundits at the time, given the magnitude of the contract and because Noah was coming off a major injury. It proved to be one of the worst roster moves in franchise history.

The former All-NBA First Team selection's tenure in New York ended when the front office released him via the stretch-provision waiver. This year marked the first time since 2016 that the Knicks are not paying Noah.

Clearly, Jackson shouldn't have pushed for the signing of his former house guest.
