Rookie hazing is something that has been a traditional staple of the NBA for quite some time now, as the first-year players have to always go through the obligation of doing chores for veterans, being teased, or pranked day in and day out, and being basically blamed for everything. But Hedo once almost took it to another level with JJ Redick.
Hedo doesn't play around
During his time at Duke, JJ Redick was a true college superstar, but his NBA career didn't start off too hot. Redick was only playing 14.8 mpg in his rookie season with the Orlando Magic, and the transition to professional basketball was everything but easy.
The fact JJ was a rookie and also faced with the constant hazing didn't help in his development, and being the confident individual he is, JJ sometimes played his cards wrong. Grant Hill, who played with JJ for that one rookie season, was that veteran leader and responsible for handling Redick's mishaps.
Recently, Hill revealed a hilarious locker room story from their time in Orlando together on JJ podcast, sharing how he saved a rookie Redick from Hedo Turkoglu pissing on him:
"The veterans brought you in the locker room. And they put him in a chair. And they're starting to talk to him. You know, you can't do this, you can't do that. And then they just duct tape him to the chair. And then they wheel him into the showers and turn the showers on. And then Hedo Turkoglu was like: 'Let's pee on him!' And I'm like no, no, no!
Grant Hill, The Old Man and the Three
Rookies always have to be first to practice or shootaround, and Redick broke that rule, forcing the veterans to teach him a lesson. Tying him up in a chair, putting him in the showers and the arena was a pretty big punishment by itself, but Hedo's idea of them all pissing on him was maybe a bit too hardcore.
But after hearing numerous rookie hazing stories through the years, that maybe wouldn't have been the craziest thing someone has done. Good thing Grant had some mercy for a young Redick.
