In the NBA, there’s the players’ code: an unwritten set of rules that is honored and followed by all the players. Call it a gentleman’s agreement, if you will. Its foundation is the universal bro code. One of its main rules - never try to steal or flirt with another man’s girlfriend or fiancee. It’s worse if he’s your friend. But Ben Simmons crossed that line and broke the bro code.
“He was trying to holler at my fiancee”
Comedian Michael Blackson detailed in an episode of the Club Shay Shay podcast hosted by Shannon Sharpe why he’s not cool with the Brooklyn Nets forward.
The incident happened during the Super Bowl weekend in Miami. Simmons was still with Kendall Jenner when Michael introduced him to his fiance Miss Rada who later claimed Ben had been sending him DMs on Instagram. Blackson tried to shrug it off, but months later, the 76ers forward was still at it.
“Shannon Sharpe: Did he not know she was your fiancee?
Blackson: He knew. 100 percent knew. He was like my homie, my little brother.“
Simmons even tried to talk to her and pretend he was interested in buying a house because Rada is a real estate agent. Blackson even tweeted about it sometime last year. You know it stings if he still talks about it until now.
Yet another blow to Ben Simmon’s reputation. (And a very funny joke, I might add) Trying to make a move on someone else's significant other is one of the rare shots you're never supposed to take. If Simmons had been given the same treatment from one of his trusted and close friends, he wouldn’t want that. So why do it to others?
Michael Blackson is still with Rada
Despite the attempts of Ben Simmons, fortunately, it didn’t work on Blackson’s fiancee. Instead, the comedian later professed his love to the world and bragged about Rada’s loyalty in an Instagram post.
If Simmons wanted to repair his image to the fans and the league, he must only look at himself and his choices in the past months. Using mental issues as cover and flirting with someone’s girlfriend is not the best way to present himself. He may not value his friendship with Michael Blackson the same way the comedian treats him as a person, but respect begets respect. It’s one thing to break the basketball code and another to break the bro code. Simmons managed to do both.
