Michael Malone on Spurs matchup: “Gregg Popovich got five rings. I got a wedding ring.”

The regular season in the NBA is officially over with playoffs starting in a few days. All the matchups are known and the one that will especially be interesting is the one between a young but talented Denver Nuggets team and the experienced San Antonio Spurs led by the coaching legend Gregg Popovich.

After their last regular season game against the Minnesota Timberwolves, the Nuggets head coach Mike Malone shared his thoughts about facing the Spurs in the playoffs. This will be an interesting matchup between two teams who have a very different system in place but also two coaches. Gregg Popovich is considered by many to be one of the best coaches in NBA history, while Malone, on the other hand, has shown tremendous improvement and is a talented young coach ready to take on the challenge.

Malone said the Nuggets will need to be disciplined for 48 minutes each game but also made an interesting remark about the comparison between him and Popovich in this playoff series.

Our fourth quarter defense has been great all year long. I still believe we still have the number one fourth-quarter defense in the NBA. I mean we are playing against San Antonio with Gregg Popovich who has 5 rings and I only have one wedding ring. We can’t wait and we need to be ready to go from the jump ball. They will go on runs but the focus, urgency, the discipline has to be there for 48 minutes in order for us to have a chance.
