Metta World Peace is one of the unique players in NBA history, and he was never shy of expressing what is on his mind, especially now that he is retired from the game. He often got in trouble because of his actions on and off the court, but when it comes to passion and love for the game, Metta is right up there with the best of them.
He was a great two-way player, and when he thought he was almost out of the league, the Lakers offered him a spot on the roster back in 2009 after they won their first championship after Shaq left. Metta took on the challenge and was a crucial piece in a team where he won his only NBA championship.
In an interview for USA Sports today, he said he was delighted when the Lakers won their 17th championship against the Heat that he had to celebrate in a special way with his friends. Metta was never afraid to share his affection for cannabis, so he and a group of friends greatly celebrated the Lakers’ win by lighting up multiple blunts during the game itself, which made the whole watching experience much better for him.
I was just home and sparked a blunt. I was partying the whole day by myself with two or three close friends. We sparked — I don’t even know — maybe 10 blunts. We had a great time. I deserved it. The Lakers won. It was crazy. It felt like I won.”I try not to indulge as I used to when I could go out, but I had a really good time in the house.”Metta World Peace, via USA Today
In one of his older interviews, Metta touched upon the crazy night after winning the championship with the Lakers back in 2010, so this story doesn’t sound so surprising. During his time with the Lakers, Metta was especially close with the late great Kobe Bryant because of their passionate approach to the game and the desire to win at all costs.
