Luka Doncic passes Michael Jordan on the all-time list of career triple-doubles

Not a lot of 21-year-olds can say they’ve surpassed Michael Jordan in the NBA record books. Luka Dončić can.

The Mavericks‘ superstar notched his 29th career triple-double in Sunday’s game against the Bulls, passing His Airness on the league’s all-time list of career triple-doubles. Luka finished the game with 36 points, 16 rebounds, and 15 assists and is now tied with Grant Hill for 15th all-time. Dončić officially hit the mark midway through the third quarter, after an incredible behind the back pass to Willie Cauley Stein.

His points total could’ve been a lot higher, but going cold in the second-half capped Luka’s performance at 36. After an incredible first half, when Luka dropped 30 points on 11-for-19 from the field, he only shot 2-of-11 from the floor and had 6 points in the next 24 minutes. So despite his incredible individual outing, Dončić is the one taking the blame for the Mavs 117-101 loss to Chicago.

“The second half, I played terrible. I was being selfish a bit I think because I had 30 points in the first half. That wasn’t me in the second half. I’ve got to do way better than that. That’s just on me. I shouldn’t be doing this.”

In Luka’s defense, Dallas is one of the teams that has been recently struck by a COVID-19 outbreak. With guys like Tim Hardaway Jr., Jalen Brunson, Dorian Finney-Smith, Maxi Kleber, Dwight Powell, and Josh Richardson out of the picture, his job of carrying the team to a victory became that much harder. But it still isn’t enough for Dončić to give himself a break.

“I was just taking some shots I shouldn’t be taking. Just have to do way better than this. As a team, we have to step up, especially defensively, and bring the energy.”

Lauri Markkanen led Chicago to a victory with 29 points and 10 rebounds, and Garrett Temple added 21 off the bench. Kristaps Porzingis put up 20 points and eight rebounds for the shorthanded Mavericks, and Cauley-Stein dropped 10 points with five rebounds. Dallas, after a four-game winning streak, has now lost two straight and will look to bounce back tonight against the Toronto Raptors.

In the meantime, Luka will continue to rack up triple-doubles and climb the list of the NBA’s all-time leaders in the category. Next up; Ben Simmons, who is at 30 TDs in his career. Who knows – he might do it tonight. Nothing is off the table with Luka.
