After last night’s win against the Pelicans, LeBron James spoke to the media about their matchup in the play-in tournament against the Golden State Warriors. The Lakers were hoping to get to the 6th spot, but unfortunately, the Denver Nuggets lost to the Blazers, which means the Blazers avoided the play-in tournament. So, LeBron will again face off against Steph Curry, but this time it will not be in the NBA finals as we got used to seeing them there, but fighting to make the playoffs and hopefully keep their championship dreams alive.
LeBron talked about the MVP award and had a lot of appreciation for Steph Curry‘s season which he ended as the leading scorer, showcasing he is still one of the best players in the NBA. There was some doubt about Curry at the start of the season because of his previous injuries, but he soon proved why he is a two-time NBA MVP. LeBron even argues Curry deserves to the MVP this season because of his impact on the Warriors, bringing them close to the playoffs in a very competitive western conference.
Our paths have crossed again, and it’s always been a level of respect that is beyond the game of basketball. Look what he has done this year. Everybody counted him out this year. Everybody said that now when Klay is hurt, can Steph lead the team on his own. What is he going to do? Will he be able to carry the team on his own? Can he carry the team into the postseason? Can he keep his team afloat? He’s done that and more. I think he has the most 40-point games in the season. He broke his own record for how many threes he’s made this year. If you are looking at an MVP if Steph is not on the GSW, then what are we looking at?LeBron James
Usually, the MVP is awarded to the best player on a team with the best winning record in the NBA. That is the case most times when someone won the MVP, but Lebron argues that shouldn’t be the case, especially this season with Steph Curry. LeBron believes Curry had the best all-around season, and his impact on the Warriors was so overwhelming that there was no chance they would be anywhere close to the playoffs if it weren’t for him.
The last time a player won the MVP award without his team having the best record was when Russell Westbrook averaged a triple-double for the first time and led the OKC without Kevin Durant. LeBron argues Curry’s impact is the same, which is one reason he should be in the MVP discussion this season. However, LeBron believes Curry will not win the award because of reasons he didn’t want to share with the media.
We get caught up in the records sometimes and get caught up on who has the best record instead of saying who had the best season that year. Steph, in my opinion, has had the best season all year. It was the same when Russ won the MVP. Russ was the first guy to have a triple-double in the season since the Big O. Everyone threw the records when he won it, and when you look at what he is doing, Steph is like. Russ deserved it that year, and obviously, I don’t think Steph will get it, but in my eyes, he played the best basketball all year along.LeBron James
When you put things into perspective, you couldn’t help but agree with many things LeBron said about Curry and his chances to win the MVP award this season. Curry is putting up more significant numbers than in his two MVP seasons, and even though the Warriors are no longer the best team in the NBA, there would probably be one of the worst teams in the NBA if it wasn’t for Curry. He concluded the season averaging 32 points, 5.5 rebounds, and almost 6 assists per game, frequently putting an absolute shooting clinic, beating teams literally by himself.
He definitely belongs in the MVP conversation; however, at this point, it seems Nikola Jokic is the frontrunner for the award, but Curry proved once again he is the most dangerous player in the NBA. The Lakers will have to do everything in their power to slow him down if they want to beat the Warriors in the play-in tournament, and LeBron is fully aware of that situation.
