Kawhi leaving Toronto made history with a Finals MVP leaving a few weeks after the championship parade. You'd expect everyone to be mad and frustrated, but as Canadians do, they are very thankful and appreciative of Kawhi (and Danny Green).
Nick Nurse talked to reporters at Summer League after Kawhi made his decision to join the Clippers. Like any other coach, he is already thinking about and gearing up for next season - remember what Pop says, coaches are never happy.
"You can't blame a guy for wanting to go home. That's what he text me today 'I'm going home.' I've just said 'You've changed a lot of lives by what you accomplished in Toronto, mine especially.' and thanked him for what he did and we'll look to the future."
Nurse talked about Kawhi leaving as a challenge, and challenges are what puts 'fuel in the tank' and drive you to fight and compete. He said this is an opportunity for other players to get more minutes and evolve, and the Raptors have players that have the potential to become impact players.
OG Anunoby missed time with an appendectomy that took him out of the playoffs and will get significant minutes now that Kawhi is gone. He can never replace what Kawhi did, but with him and Siakam, the Raptors have young forwards that you can feel optimistic about taking a step forward in their game over the summer.
The competitor that he is, Nurse did have one final thought about Kawhi.
