Why Luka Doncic is the 2022 NBA MVP

If only he showed up in shape at the start of the season...

Luka Doncic is playing like an MVP at the moment

When Luka Doncic arrived in the NBA, many experts predicted at least one MVP award in his future. Since the start of 2022, Doncic has played phenomenal basketball and has been the best player in the league for several weeks - is it too late to win the MVP?

Dallas playing well

For a player to be considered in the MVP discussion, his team must be performing well. The Dallas Mavericks are 26-8 since January 2022, and Doncic must be credited for the turnaround after the Mavericks' front office, in somewhat of a surprising move, decided to ship away Kristaps Porzingis for Spencer Dinwiddie and Davis Bertans.

Fans got a bit disappointed at first because they expected to get more assets in exchange for the unicorn. But the gamble has paid off, so far, with Dinwiddie sinking back-to-back game-winners against the Boston Celtics and Brooklyn Nets.

Since January, the Slovenian wunderkind has been averaging 29.9 points, 10.2 rebounds, and 8.7 assists. Dallas owns the second-best record in 2022, and almost a triple-double average means that MVP Doncic has arrived, and teams should notice. The Mavericks have also topped the power rankings of CBS Sports after impressive wins against the Nets and Celtics.

On the other hand, Nikola Jokic and Joel Embiid are still neck-and-neck for the MVP award due to consistently giving stellar performances since the start of the season. If he doesn’t win the MVP, Luka will only have himself to blame - more specifically, the extra 30 pounds he brought to Dallas from Slovenia.

Can Doncic finally make it past the first round?

In the last two years, the Dallas Mavericks were booted out twice in the first round of playoffs against the L.A. Clippers. The fans are expecting a different result this time around with new coaching staff, renewed commitment on defense, and a better supporting cast.

If there’s any indication that Luka lacked trust in his teammates before, it’s different this time. He willingly passed the last shot to Dinwiddie, who fortunately delivered. Spencer has not even been on the team for an entire season, yet Luka has trusted him enough to take the last shot.

With the way the team is performing, there is a growing belief among Mavs fans that the team can finally go deeper in the playoffs. If Luka Doncic wants everyone to know that MVP Doncic has arrived, now is the perfect time to announce it.
