Towns: "I'm lucky to be alive"

Karl-Anthony-Towns

It was a surprising report just before the game, Karl Anthony towns was not in the starting lineup, as he wasn't with the team. Then we learned he had a car accident driving to the game and couldn't make it to the game. No updates followed, so you'd assume it was a minor thing. It turns out it wasn't.

The accident could have went -- I'd say I had a 5 percent chance of making it out alive. I hit the 5 percent mark. I'd say 4 percent was to be seriously injured, and 1 percent was to be minorly injured -- and I came out in the 1 percent.

Assistant strength and conditioning coach Kurt Joseph was driving with Towns in the passenger seat when they had to stop to account for an accident in front of them. Their Santa Fe was then hit by a semi truck at, what Towns estimates to be, 35 - 45 mph.

Fortunately, no one was severely injured, but Towns did point out that wearing a seatbelt saved him from much worse: "If I don't have that seatbelt I'm going right through the windshield." Towns exhibited concussion-like symptoms, so he was sidelined for two games by league protocol.

We don't know why the truck driver failed to recognize there was a stop in front of him and brake accordingly, but this is as good as a reminder as any to USE YOUR SEATBELT and KEEP YOUR EYES ON THE ROAD. No cellphones while driving!

This is a reminder of the tragic loss of Dražen Petrović who died from injuries suffered in a traffic accident when he was in the passenger seat, without a seatbelt. Dražen's girlfriend tried to avoid a truck that had stopped on the highway and as a consequence of the impact, Dražen went through the windshield.

Just a moment is enough for tragedy to happen and we should all be careful and mindful of ourselves and others.
