Orlando Magic passing on Chet Holmgren is a Kevin Durant type of blunder

This could be such a pivotal before and after moment that our kids will look back at this day and laugh at the absurdity.

The Orlando Magic took Paulo Banchero at number one. This could be such a pivotal before and after moment that our kids will look back at this day and laugh at the absurdity. Kind of like how we look at 2007 and reminisce Kevin Durant going number two.

Chet Holmgren is special

Let's get the bones of this - which is a pun because that's all that Chet Holmgren is, right? You don't have to be a draft expert to know the criticisms of Chet. You wouldn't have to be a basketball fan to list them out. He looks too skinny. He will get pushed around. He doesn't exhibit the 'physical brand of basketball'.

So even though we know that his ceiling is the highest in the draft, the Orlando Magic went with the safe pick. Paulo Banchero is NBA-ready. He moves exceptionally well. He should have an immediate impact - which is exactly what the Magic are not at the liberty of having right now - some patience.

And now Chet falls to the NBA’s development team. A team that won't even sniff playoffs for at least two years and will run the decades drafts like mobsters ran the prohibition era. But at least Orlando went with the safe pick.

There's nothing wrong with Banchero - he will be a pretty good player - way less downside the Holmgren - so you take him one because no one wants to be the franchise that went for it at one and got a bust.

Too Skinny?

But you know who else scored second overall picks: Kevin Durant and Brandon Ingram. All had similar areas of improvement. 'They were too skinny'. 'They couldnt bang down low'.

This isn't 1994 any more. Big guys aren't getting bulldozed anymore by giants. They're spacing the floor. Their playing on guards. Their playmaking as much as anybody. All things Chet does quite well.

So will the Orlando Magic regret passing on now former Gonzaga Bulldog? Yes. And the whole NBA world will keep reminding them about it.
