The House of Giannis

When you draft a guy 15th in the draft at 6-foot-8½ and 196 pounds, he grows to 6-foot-11, 222 pounds and has a wingspan of 7-foot-3 (yes, 4 inches more than his height) you don’t need the biggest scoreboard in the NBA. Trust me, everyone will see him dunk just fine. Well, the Bucks don’t agree.

The Milwaukee Bucks will start the next NBA season in a brand new $524 million arena. The new arena set in downtown Milwaukee will seat 17,500 people and is continuing the trend of building arenas with fewer seats hoping for a better atmosphere. It will have the biggest scoreboard ever to be installed in an NBA arena at 29 feet tall by 25 feet wide and one of its many facilities will, as it suits Milwaukee, be a beer garden.

Barclays Center in Brooklyn, home of the Nets, was built in 2012. , and has 17,732 seats, Golden 1 Center in Sacramento was finished in 2016. , and has 17,600 seats. The only outlier is the new Pistons arena in downtown Detroit with 20,491 and they are having problems filling those seats. The Warriors will start the 2019-2020 season in the brand new Chase Arena and it will seat 18,000 people. Obviously, team success and the location's economic power influence those as well, but it seems Detroit didn’t get the memo.

NBA teams are realizing that when it comes to arenas less(ish) is more. The only question remaining is what will be the new Bucks arena name. Naming rights will obviously go to the highest bidder but we know that for the foreseeable future we will most likely know it as The House of Giannis.

Maybe that’s why they need the huge scoreboard. You need room to write ‘’Antetokounmpo 48 PTS, 20 RBD, 8 AST, 3 BLK, 5 STL’’.
