Steve Nash explains what makes Luka Dončić such a tough matchup

luka & nash

The talent of Luka Dončić speaks for itself. Slovenian basketball prodigy is racking admirers since he entered the league in 2018. When you take into consideration his unique talent and skillset, along with calmness in nerve-wracking moments, it's hard to believe he's turning 22 today. Despite his age, Luka's already playing like a veteran, and the numbers back it up. Dončić already has 32 triple-doubles under his belt in his only third season in the NBA. That's more than Michael Jordan, John Havlicek, and Grant Hill.

Also, Luka holds numerous scoring records by the age of 21, and his name is often in the same sentence as the game's greatest players like Jordan, LeBron James, or Magic Johnson. And his game is often compared to other players. One of those players is Steve Nash. That comparison started when the Mavericks owner Mark Cuban and team president Donnie Nelson compared Dončič to Nash after a trade with the Hawks to get their superstar during the 2018 draft. Nash, who spoke greatly about the Slovenian in the past, stating that Luka is "maybe the best 20-year-old the NBA has ever seen", once again complimented the young Mavericks guard.

"Luka is one of the most exciting talents we've seen. Do I see some of myself in him? If I were 6-foot-8 and 230 pounds, yeah. That's a big difference when you're 6-foot-2, 175 pounds."

Nash is saying that Luka is a lot more versatile than he was during his playing career. Even though Nash was one of the best pure point guards in history, he had to be more creative and smarter on both ends on the floor to be effective. He hadn't had the size like Luka, who, on the other hand, can use his body to defend or score over smaller guards.
Except for Luka's size, Nash also underlined his character.

"That is such a weapon to be able to have that size, physicality, skill and feel for the game — and his personality. He has a personality at such a young age to be able to take over NBA games. Very, very special repertoire or skillset. He is a very, very unique player, even historically."
