Pau-Gasol-Kobe-Bryant

Pau Gasol and his wife Catherine McDonnell paid the ultimate tribute to Kobe Bryant and his daughter Gianna, by naming their newborn baby after Gigi.

Gasol announced the birth of his first child on Sunday, highlighting her "very meaningful name," and including the hashtag #girldad as a reference to his former teammate.

Pau's wife Catherine wrote on Instagram: "Elisabet Gianna Gasol joined our family on September 10th, 2020. She made a quick and easy entrance on a VERY special day, her great-grandmother Elizabeth's 100th birthday and her mom and dad's 2nd engagement anniversary. We are already so in love with our sweet Ellie!!"

Kobe was a very close friend of Pau's, as their families developed the bond that outgrew the game of basketball. Gasol spent some holiday time with the Bryant family, following the tragic helicopter crash that claimed the lives of Kobe and his daughter Gigi, along with seven others.

Kobe's wife Vanessa congratulated the Gasol family on their new addition, as she's set to be the godmother of Elisabet Gianna Gasol.

My goddaughter is here!!!! Congratulations. Love you 3 so much! So touched by your request to honor my Gigi. Can’t wait to hold Elisabet Gianna Gasol.
